When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?
Permanent teeth are designed to last a lifetime, and saving a natural tooth is usually the best choice. Sometimes, however, extraction is the safest way to protect your oral health. Common reasons include:
- A tooth that is severely damaged or broken below the gumline
- Deep decay or infection that cannot be repaired with a filling or root canal
- Impacted wisdom teeth that cannot fully come in, or that cause pain, swelling or infection
- Overcrowded teeth that need space
- A dental injury
An impacted tooth is trapped under the gum or bone, and removing it can protect neighbouring teeth from damage. If you have sudden, severe pain or swelling, our emergency dentist team can see you the same day.

Extraction Aftercare and Recovery
Most people feel back to normal within a few days, though a wisdom tooth extraction may take a little longer. To help the area heal:
- Bite gently on the gauze for the time we recommend to control bleeding
- Avoid using a straw, spitting hard, smoking or vigorous rinsing for the first few days
- Eat soft foods and avoid chewing on the extraction site
- Use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling
- Rinse gently with warm salt water after the first day
Call us if pain gets worse after two or three days, if bleeding does not stop, or if you have a fever or increasing swelling.

Cost of Tooth Extraction
The cost of an extraction depends on the tooth, whether the extraction is simple or surgical and whether wisdom teeth are impacted, so there is no single price. Bow River Dental follows the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide, and we explain your options and costs before treatment begins. Frequently Asked Questions
Does having a tooth or wisdom tooth pulled hurt?
You should not feel pain during the procedure because we numb the area with local anesthetic, and sedation options are available if you feel anxious. You may feel pressure but not sharp pain. Some soreness afterward is normal and can usually be managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever.
How long does it take to recover from a wisdom tooth extraction?
Most people feel much better within three to five days, and the gum usually heals over the next few weeks. Swelling often peaks around the second day and then fades. Following your aftercare instructions helps you heal faster and lowers the risk of problems.
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. Wisdom teeth that come in straight, are healthy and can be cleaned easily may not need to be removed. We recommend removal when they are impacted, decayed, infected, causing crowding or damaging neighbouring teeth. Digital imaging helps us decide.
What is a dry socket, and how can I prevent it?
A dry socket happens when the blood clot in the extraction site is lost too early, which can cause strong pain a few days after surgery. To prevent it, avoid straws, smoking and hard spitting, and follow your aftercare instructions. Call us if pain gets worse after the first few days.
How much does a tooth extraction cost, and is it covered by insurance?
The cost depends on the tooth and how complex the extraction is. Many insurance plans cover part of the cost, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan lists extractions among the services it may cover when your dentist recommends them. We bill most insurance plans directly and can give you a personalized quote.
