What Is Dental Bone Grafting?

A dental bone graft is a procedure that adds bone or bone-building material to your jaw. Over the following months, your body's own cells use the graft as a scaffold and replace it with new, natural bone. The result is a stronger, thicker foundation that can hold a dental implant securely.

When a tooth is lost or removed, the jaw bone that once held it slowly shrinks. Bone grafting slows or reverses that loss, which protects the shape of your jaw and face and keeps your options open for tooth replacement.

Bone Grafting Recovery and Aftercare

Some swelling, tenderness and minor bleeding are normal for a few days. To help your graft heal:

  • Eat soft, cool foods for the first few days and avoid chewing on the site
  • Avoid using a straw, spitting hard or vigorous rinsing
  • Do not smoke, which can cause the graft to fail
  • Use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling
  • Take any medication as directed and keep your follow-up visits

Call us if pain gets worse after the first few days, if swelling increases or if you have a fever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a bone graft before a dental implant?

An implant needs enough healthy bone around it to hold it firmly, much like a strong foundation for a house. If you have lost bone after an extraction, gum disease or wearing dentures, a graft rebuilds it. We check your bone with digital imaging and tell you whether grafting is needed.

Is a dental bone graft painful?

We numb the area with local anesthetic, so you should feel pressure but not pain during the procedure. Sedation options are available if you feel anxious. Some soreness and swelling for a few days afterward is normal and can usually be managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever.

How long does a bone graft take to heal?

The gum usually heals within a couple of weeks, but the graft itself needs several months to turn into solid bone. We check your healing and take images to confirm the bone is ready before we place an implant. Your timeline depends on the size and type of your graft.

What materials are used for a bone graft?

Graft materials can come from your own bone, from a tissue bank or from safe synthetic products. We use modern graft materials and recommend the option that best suits your needs. We explain the choice and answer your questions before we begin.

How much does a dental bone graft cost, and is it covered?

The cost depends on the size of the graft and the material used. Many insurance plans cover part of the cost when it is done with an extraction or implant, and coverage varies. We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide, bill most insurance directly and can give you a personalized quote.
