About Gum Disease & Bad Breath Care at Bow River Dental
Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and in its early stage it can often be reversed when caught in time. If you are searching for gum disease treatment in Calgary, Bow River Dental provides gentle, thorough care to restore gum health and fight chronic bad breath at its source.
Gum disease often develops quietly, so many people do not notice it until their gums bleed or their breath changes. Our NW Calgary team treats every stage, from early gingivitis to advanced periodontitis, and we do it in a judgement-free, comfortable setting for patients of all ages.
Our Gum Disease & Bad Breath Services

Periodontal Treatment
From early gingivitis to advanced periodontitis, we customize a treatment plan that protects your teeth long-term. Your care starts with a comprehensive periodontal exam and can include targeted antibacterial therapy, a maintenance program and education on home care. Learn more about Periodontal Treatment.

Bad Breath Treatment
Chronic bad breath, also called halitosis, is almost always treatable. We identify the root cause and give you a clear path to fresh breath, with a personalized hygiene plan, tongue cleaning techniques and discreet, judgement-free care. Read more about Bad Breath Treatment.

Scaling & Root Planing
A deeper-than-routine cleaning removes plaque and tartar below the gumline and helps treat gum disease. We use a local anesthetic for comfort, remove bacterial deposits, smooth the root surfaces and promote gum reattachment. Find out more about Scaling & Root Planing.
What Does Gum Disease Look Like?
Healthy gums are firm and pink. Gum disease can change how they look and feel, and bad breath often comes along with it. Watch for these signs:
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Bad breath or a bad taste that does not go away
- Gums that pull away from your teeth, making teeth look longer
- Loose teeth or a change in how your teeth fit together
- Pus between your teeth and gums
Bad breath can also come from bacteria on the tongue, dry mouth, certain foods or tobacco, so it does not always mean gum disease. Either way, an exam is the quickest way to find the cause. Regular Check-Ups & Cleanings are also the best way to catch gum problems early.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can gum disease be reversed?
Early gum disease, called gingivitis, can often be reversed with a professional cleaning and good daily care. Advanced gum disease, called periodontitis, cannot be fully reversed, but treatment can stop it from getting worse and help protect your teeth. The earlier it is found, the simpler the treatment usually is.
Can I cure gum disease without a dentist?
Better brushing and flossing can calm early gum inflammation, but they cannot remove hardened tartar or bacteria below the gumline. If your gums still bleed or swell after a couple of weeks of careful cleaning, it is time to see a dentist. Home remedies alone will not treat established gum disease.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and gum disease treatment?
A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth and just below the gumline. Gum disease treatment, such as scaling and root planing, cleans deeper below the gumline and smooths the root surfaces so the gums can heal. Your dentist will recommend which one you need after an exam.
What causes bad breath, and can a dentist fix it?
Common causes include bacteria on the tongue and between the teeth, gum disease, dry mouth, certain foods and tobacco. A dentist can find the cause and treat dental sources such as gum disease or plaque buildup. If the cause is not dental, we will suggest you speak with your doctor.
Is gum disease treatment covered by insurance or the CDCP?
Many insurance plans cover part of the cost of gum disease treatment. The Canadian Dental Care Plan lists periodontal services, including deep scaling, among the services it may cover when your dentist recommends them, depending on your eligibility. We bill most insurance plans directly and can help you understand what to expect before treatment.
